MEDICATIONS FOR HAIR LOSS

FINASTERIDE

Finasteride, also known as Proscar and Propecia, is an anti-androgen medication approved by the FDA in the United States and the Thai FDA for the treatment of genetic hair loss.

How Does Finasteride Work?

Finasteride inhibits the enzyme type II 5-alpha reductase, which plays a crucial role in reducing hair loss in individuals with a genetic predisposition. Studies have demonstrated that approximately 70-80% of patients respond positively to this medication.

Benefits of Finasteride Treatment

Patients often experience a reduction in hair loss, potential increases in hair thickness and quantity, particularly in the crown and vertex areas. However, it’s essential to use Finasteride continuously, as discontinuation may lead to the return of hair loss. It’s important to note that while Finasteride is effective in managing hair loss, it doesn’t directly address the genetic cause, and its effectiveness may diminish over time.

Potential Side Effects

Like all medications, Finasteride can have side effects, including:

1. Allergic reactions such as itching, redness, and skin swelling.

2. Sexual dysfunction (more common with age).

3. Abnormal ejaculation.

4. Reduced semen volume.

5. Erectile dysfunction.

6. Breast tenderness or enlargement.

7. Testicular pain.

It’s also not recommended for use in women due to potential effects on pregnancy, which may resolve upon discontinuation. While it has no significant impact on overall health and cancer risk, patients should be aware of potential side effects.

MINOXIDIL

In addition to Finasteride, we may also recommend Minoxidil, a medication that stimulates hair growth. Minoxidil can be applied as a liquid or lotion (2%-5%) or taken in pill form (2.5 and 5 mg). It is an option for those seeking to complement their hair loss treatment, but it’s important to consult with our medical team to determine the best approach for your specific needs.

How Minoxidil Works

Minoxidil, initially a hypertension medication, promotes hair growth by improving blood flow to hair follicles. This encourages new hair cell growth, making it effective for androgenetic alopecia.

Benefits of Minoxidil

1. Effective: Minoxidil stimulates hair regrowth, particularly for male and female pattern baldness.

2. Non-Prescription: The topical form is available over-the-counter, eliminating the need for prescriptions. However, the oral form needs to be prescribed by the doctors.

3. Easy Application: Apply it topically or take it orally, making it convenient.

Potential Side Effects

1. Scalp Irritation: Mild itching or redness can occur. (Topical form)

2. Increased Hair Growth: May affect facial or body hair.

3. Initial Shedding: Temporary hair loss before new growth.

4. Allergic Reactions: Rare but may include skin swelling or redness.
