Hair Transplantation in WomenWhile most people are more familiar with hair transplantation in men, especially in cases of androgenetic alopecia (AGA), there is a growing interest among women in undergoing hair transplantation to boost their confidence and enhance their self-image.
Who Makes a Suitable Candidate for Hair Transplantation in Women?
1. Absence of Active Scarring or Non-Scarring Alopecia:
Women considering hair transplantation should not have active scarring or non-scarring alopecia conditions, such as alopecia areata, discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA), telogen effluvium (TE), and others.
2. Adequate Donor Area Density :
Since the occipital scalp is commonly used as the primary donor site for hair transplantation, women with poor donor hair density or severe thinning in the occipital scalp may not be suitable candidates for the procedure.
Am I a Suitable Candidate for Hair Transplantation in Women?
Hair transplantation in women can be more complex compared to procedures in men. Each patient’s situation varies, so we highly recommend consulting with our doctors for personalized recommendations. Common concerns for hair transplantation in women include:
- High and/or wide forehead
- Triangular alopecia
- Camouflage of surgical scars (e.g., after facelift/necklift/browlift or hairline lowering surgery)
- Increasing density on the crown
Which Technique Should I Choose ?
For women, three main techniques are available:
- FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)
- FUE (Follicular Unit Excision)
- a. Shaven FUE
- b. Non-shaven FUE (แบบไม่โกนผมด้านหลัง)
- c. Long-hair FUE (แบบปลูกผมยาว)
The choice of technique also depends on the number of grafts required to fill in thinning areas or restore the hairline. Consulting with our doctors is advisable for personalized guidance. For more details, please visit the following links for each procedure on our website.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
1. How many grafts do I need?
Answer: The number of grafts required depends on the size of the recipient site; larger areas require more grafts.
2. How long will it take before I can style my hair as usual after hair transplantation?
Answer: For non-shaven and long-hair FUE, you can resume your normal hair styling within a few weeks since the donor area is not shaved. However, these techniques are more expensive and time-consuming due to the need for experienced surgeons and additional labor. For shaven FUE, we typically do not shave the entire occipital scalp in women, leaving the area around the donor site intact so you can style your hair as desired. However, it may take at least 7-8 months for the hair to grow to its previous length, depending on your original hair length.
3. How long does the procedure take?
Answer: Shaven FUE typically takes 4-6 hours, while non-shaven and long-hair FUE can take anywhere from 6-10 hours.
